A life in context

Muhammed’s career in the Archaeological Survey of India included the difficult conservation of Bateshwar. In his published account, access required negotiations with armed outlaws before stone-by-stone work could proceed.

This is a modern conservation story involving an institutional team and craftspeople. The cause of the ancient collapse is uncertain; the collection does not label it as a proven act of iconoclasm.

Beyond these sites

  • Worked on archaeological excavation, restoration and public interpretation.
  • Received the Padma Shri in 2019 AD.

ASI engineers, conservators, stoneworkers and local participants. Muhammed describes negotiating with Nirbhay Gujjar.
What endured
A substantial part of the ruined group was restored; later work continued beyond his tenure.

What the evidence leaves open. A possible earthquake is a hypothesis for the collapse. The account does not establish a historical destroyer; negotiation details are his recollection.
