A life in context

A British engineer and archaeological surveyor, Cunningham helped organise the Archaeological Survey of India. His excavations at Bodhgaya exposed earlier structures and accompanied extensive restoration.

Modern scholarship asks what was lost or altered during that reconstruction. Inclusion here records a contribution to conservation history, not approval of every colonial collecting or restoration practice.

Beyond these sites

  • Helped establish systematic archaeological surveying in India.
  • Published reports, plans and studies of sites and inscriptions.

THE WORK OF PRESERVATION

Places, actions & evidence

1870s–1880s AD · Bihar

Excavating and remaking Mahabodhi

Documented

Excavation and restoration changed the temple and its precinct; photographs preserve evidence of its earlier state.

Alexander Cunningham’s role
Survey and excavation leadership
How it happened
Archaeological excavation, recording and structural reconstruction.
Who helped
ASI survey staff, photographers, local workers and contemporary restoration teams.
What endured
The temple was conserved but substantially remodelled. Modern research uses the records to reassess those changes.

What the evidence leaves open. Colonial restoration choices are debated. Recording a contribution does not imply that every alteration preserved historical authenticity.
